This particular catchall is my design and I have painted a number of them in different styles. It’s a fun piece to paint and very showy. It measures 10 5/8” x 18” x 5 1/8”. The back is made from ½” alder and the bowl is turned out of poplar.
I like “C” and “S” curves, so I wanted to incorporate these shapes in the back and the bowl section and lengthen the bottom part of the bowl for an interesting shape so it is in proportion to the top.
Objects of this sort were found in the Norwegian home to catch all the odds and ends. Many were bigger and some called mitten bowls. It was a place to put mittens so they were handy by the door.
I made this one smaller, a good place to toss your keys, etc. There is a Hallingdal design featured in “Rosemaling Styles, Study and Design for this product.
