This 12” “Notch and C” bowl was painted in the Numedal style using Jo Sonja acrylics in 2007.
Numedal, located in the Buskerud fylke, lies to the south of Hallingdal and northwest of Telemark. Its small population was scattered over its slopes and throughout its valleys. The many mountain pastures and trees, along with favorable weather conditions, gave the people a comfortable way of living.
In the 1700’s rosemalers were equal to the best in Hallingdal and Telemark. Painters were self-sufficient, even through there was competition and influence from neighboring painters. After 1800 much of the painting was done by Telemark rosemalers. Tendril and flowers Baroque styles exhibited bold use of color and sometimes figures and motifs were incorporated. The Uvdal church displays excellent examples of graceful vines, tendrils and five-petal flowers. The earliest known painter was Tore Kravik (1748-1810). Sebjorn Kverndalen (1786-1875), an excellent cabinetmaker and woodcarver was one of the outstanding early painters who’s work I admire and which inspired this painting.
The packet includes three pages of instruction, two enlarged photographs and the line drawing. Use “Rosemaling Styles, Study and Design” for a reference.
