The Undredal kyrke was painted in 2002 using JoSonja acrylics on a 10” square plate from a photo I took the year before while studying on the Vesterheim Rosemaling tour.
Undredal is a small village on the Aaurland Fjord northeast of Voss. High mountains and steep hillsides surround it. This church is one of the oldest in Norway. When repairs were done, the year 1147 was found carved on a roof truss. It was originally a stave church, but was extensively rebuilt in 1722 and restored in 1962. The walls are the color I’ve used on the rim of the plate, and are covered with beautifully painted vines and tulips. The vaulted ceiling is painted with stars and angels. So you can see how I was inspired to paint this church. The painting is quite primitive, but so charming. The year 1696 is painted on the pulpit.
The packet includes four pages of instructions using JoSonja acrylics, two photographs and the line drawing.
